ReWear: a green closet for teens will provide more than clothes
"Green" is a very popular color these days and it is at the heart of the latest Youth Action Hudson initiative.
"ReWear" is an idea developed by YAH's teen and adult volunteers and mentors from businesses and the community at large.
Billed as "a green closet for teens," ReWear will provide low cost recycled clothing for teens. Youth Action teens with their adult mentors have developed a marketing plan and are learning something about retail sales and management. The goal is to open ReWear next month in time for back-to-school shopping. The shop will also have a "portable storefront," designed and built by the local problem-solving geniuses of Destination Imagination, that will be used to raise awareness as well as sell clothes.
In addition to providing vintage, and good, gently-used clothing, ReWear middle school and high school volunteers will get hands-on, real world experience in opening, operating and managing a sustainable business. According to YAH staff members, the ReWear experience will draw on local businesses as role models. Volunteers will develop leadership and employment skills and have the opportunity to take risks, implement ideas and learn from the outcome "while building lifelong habits of giving and serving."
ReWear is looking for donations of clothing for both males and females including jeans and pants, tops, belts, jewelry, prom and party dresses, purses, shoes, sunglasses and ties. The store is also in need of a working cash register, bins suitable for collecting clothing, hangers and clothing racks.
In addition to volunteer help and advice and the items mentioned here, ReWear could use some help with start-up costs. Anyone interested in making a donation can send it to ReWear, Youth Action Hudson, 911 Fourth St., Hudson, WI 54016.
