River Rats still searching for first win
The Hudson River Rats amateur baseball team lost a pair of games over the weekend to drop to 0-4 on the season.
The River Rats headed south to the La Crosse area and were defeated 10-9 by the Chaseburg-Coon Valley Blues Saturday and 15-0 by the La Crosse Athletics Sunday.
Chaseburg-Coon Valley was the 2007 Wisconsin Baseball Association state champions while La Crosse had the WBA's second-best record last season.
This weekend the Rats will travel to Plum City for the annual Plum City Memorial Day Tournament with their first game scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. against the Bay City Bombers. Hudson will kick off St. Croix Valley Baseball League play May 30 at home against the St. Croix Fall River Bandits.
Saturday against Chaseburg-Coon Valley, Brian Sparstad was tagged with the loss on the mound, allowing 10 runs, nine earned, on 14 hits while striking out five in five innings of work. Russ Jiskra threw three scoreless innings of relief, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out three.
Outfielder Kirk Krumrei led the River Rats at the plate with three hits and a run scored.
Sunday at La Crosse the Rats managed just three hits -- singles by Chris Kein, Mitch Lewis and Sparstad -- in a 15-0 seven inning loss.
Rat starter Davis Lenzen was roughed up in his first outing with the squad, throwing 3 1/3 innings and allowing 11 runs, eight earned, on eight hits with eight walks.
