The Hudson Board of Education made a decision at its Tuesday meeting about who will and who won't be going to River Crest Elementary next year.

The boundary change states that the neighborhoods of Carriage Lane/W. Red Cedar Canyon/E. Red Cedar Canyon/Lighthouse will be reassigned to E.P. Rock Elementary School.

Children in the Heritage Greens neighborhood will continue to attend River Crest.

The change affects 45 K-4 students from 38 families currently at River Crest and their preschool siblings.

Students from the adjusted area without preschool siblings can either choose to attend Rock or remain at River Crest.

Current River Crest students with preschool siblings will be required to attend Rock Elementary beginning in the fall. Any new students and preschool siblings moving into the adjusted area will attend Rock.

The district will not grant any boundary exceptions to River Crest or Rock, and current boundary exceptions at River Crest will expire at the end of this school year. Current Rock boundary exceptions may continue.

All non-resident open enrollment applications for River Crest or Rock will be denied.

The district administration says the change in the school boundaries is necessary for higher than expected enrollment at River Crest, which currently sits at 92 percent capacity in its first year. The move will redistribute enrollment to available space at Rock, which currently has four available classrooms.

The board had considered other options including exceeding class size guidelines at River Crest, enrollment management by capping or closing grade levels at River Crest, and the construction of two additional classrooms at River Crest. The cost of the new classrooms plus an additional room from a remodeled space within the school was estimated at around $850,000.

Board members with the exception of Tom Holland rejected the other options, stating that the cost to build was too high and that class size guidelines are too important to student learning.

Holland supported temporarily exceeding class size guidelines at River Crest.
