School board approves orchestra program

Only one obstacle remains to the establishment of a string orchestra program in the Hudson School District. The school board voted unanimously to add the program to the district's music curriculum provided there is money in the staffing budget to hire a full-time string music teacher.

The school board will hold a special meeting April 21 to discuss staffing needs districtwide. Director of Instructional Services Dr. Chuck Sambs said he is optimistic that the staff position will be funded for the upcoming school year.

The program will begin in fourth and fifth grades and expand annually through the secondary grades. Middle school band director Carl Meincke advised the school board at an earlier meeting that he had found two businesses that pledged $15,000 to purchase the larger string instruments needed at the secondary level if the program was adopted and a teacher was hired.

For more information on the program contact Meincke at (715) 386-4222 or Sambs at (715) 386-4904.
