Senate refuses vote on illegal immigrant bill
Wisconsin businesses will not lose out on tax breaks for hiring illegal immigrants. The state Senate refused to vote April 22 on a last-minute bill to make those companies ineligible for state tax credits, property tax exemptions, and state and local government contracts.
Those caught hiring illegal immigrants would have lost out on those benefits for seven years. Lawmakers of both parties supported the crackdown, but it had widespread opposition from manufacturing and agricultural groups. Senate Minority Leader Scott Fitzgerald blocked the bill's passage on the final day of the session, thus killing it for the year.
