Softball falls to state-ranked teams
The schedule wasn't kind to the Raider softball team last week.
Hudson had to face the No. 3 ranked Division 1 team -- Chippewa Falls -- in a doubleheader on the road last Tuesday, May 15 before returning home to host the top-ranked Division 2 team -- Baldwin-Woodville -- on Friday, May 18.
Between them the Cardinals and Blackhawks have a combined record of 41-3 this season. Both added to their win total last week as the Cardinals swept the Raiders, 15-4 and 12-1, and the Blackhawks defeated Hudson 11-1.
Maya Triebold had two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs in the first game of last Tuesday's doubleheader at Big Rivers Conference leading Chippewa Falls while Ellie Whitacre tripled and had two RBI. Starter Lexi Smith was tagged with the loss on the mound, allowing nine earned runs on 13 hits in four innings of work.
Hudson was held to just two hits in the nightcap but held a 1-0 lead until the Cardinals had five runs in the fifth on their way to a 12-1 victory. Steph Little pitched six innings and allowed just three earned runs on nine hits while striking out three to take the loss.
Little accounted for Hudson's lone run of the game Friday against Baldwin-Woodville when she cracked a solo home run over the left field fence in the second inning to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead. But the Blackhawks scored three runs in the third inning to take the lead for good, and added six more in the top of the seventh to put the game away.
Hudson, now 4-6 in the BRC, 10-8 overall, wrapped up the regular season with a home doubleheader against Eau Claire Memorial this past Tuesday, May 22. They open WIAA regional play Tuesday, May 29.
