The name may have changed on the outside of the building, but for the past decade at least one person inside has remained the same.

Cathy Sorum will retire from a banking career at Wells Fargo Feb. 20 after more than 32 years in the industry, including the last decade at Wells Fargo and as manager of its predecessor, Norwest Bank.

"I enjoyed banking and finance," said Sorum, who will also celebrate her 55th birthday on her last day of work. "I really enjoyed management and the involvement in the community."

She served as Rotary president in 2003-04, was on the Junior Achievement board and the Chamber of Commerce board in Hudson.

"I had a good experience with banks," she said. "I made a lot of friends. My best friend, Donna Amundson of Houlton, and I met when I took my first job at Minnesota Federal Savings and Loan in Roseville, Minn., in 1976."

Sorum started out with home equity loans and worked in Roseville for 13 years during a time when Minnesota Federal became 1st Minnesota Savings and Loan.

Then there was another merger and the bank became Norwest. She served as a manager at Norwest banks throughout the Minnesota metro area including Cottage Grove, Hastings, back to Roseville, then Bloomington, Woodbury and finally Hudson.

In the meantime, a co-worker organized a blind date for her and a young Hudson businessman named Gerry Sorum. It apparently worked out because the two were married a year and a half later, and she settled in Hudson for the duration.

After 22 years of marriage, Gerry died on May 8, 2007, at age 59 after a long bout with cancer.

The former Cathy Ruud grew up in Rice Lake where she graduated from high school in 1972. She attended the local technical college and earned a degree in what she said in the day was called "secretarial science," moved right into banking and never looked back.

Sorum feels it's now time to do other things. "I look forward to having more time to work in the garden," she said. "I love to cook and would like to take some culinary classes. I want to travel and enjoy family and friends."
