Speakers named for tonight's community listening session on heroin use

Rep. Dean Knudson (R-Hudson) will host a community listening session on heroin abuse and related legislation on Monday, Jan. 13, 7-8 p.m. at the Hudson High School Auditorium.


Members of the public are invited to give their input on the proposals, as well as to ask questions of community leaders to gain their perspective on the fight against heroin. In addition to Knudson, confirmed attendees include:

--State Senator Sheila Harsdorf

--State Rep. John Nygren (R-Marinette), author of Assembly bills 445-448.

--Hudson Police Chief Marty Jensen

--St. Croix County Sheriff John Shilts

--Amber Hahn, St. Croix County DA’s Office

--The Honorable Edward Vlack, St. Croix County Circuit Court Judge

--Amber Perry, St. Croix County Drug Court Coordinator

--Pete Van Dusartz, manager, Hudson Hospital Programs for Change

--Dr. Kevin Helmen, Hudson Physicians

--Tricia Christiansen, Hudson Community Foundation

Assembly bills 445-448 will receive public hearings in the Assembly on Thursday, Jan. 9. As they stand, the bills would:

--Provide limited immunity for people who either call 911 or bring those suffering an overdose to an emergency room.

--Clear the way to drop off narcotics at drug repositories.

--Expand the numbers of first responders allowed to carry and administer the drug Narcan, which is used to counter an overdose of opiates.

--Require people to show identification when picking up opiate prescriptions at pharmacies.
