Spikers battle back to beat Rice Lake
After a slow start in its only match last week, the Raider volleyball team stormed back to win the last three sets and defeat Rice Lake, 3-2, last Tuesday at the high school.
Hudson dropped the first two sets, 20-25 and 21-25, before coming from behind to win the third set, 25-23. They took the fourth set by a score of 25-17, then after being down 7-9 in the fifth and final set, made a run at the end to win, 15-12.
"The girls started slowly, as evidenced by the first two set scores," head coach Dennis Saathoff said. "But then they really began to focus and started to believe they could win the match."
The Raiders, now 3-1 in Big Rivers Conference play, traveled to Eau Claire North (2-1) Tuesday and will host Baldwin-Woodville Thursday, Oct. 1. Saathoff said he hopes the team can build on last week's win.
"It was a good character builder for them, and hopefully they can carry it on the rest of the conference season," he said.
The junior varsity also battled back from a 1-0 deficit to beat Rice Lake last Tuesday, 15-25, 28-26, 15-8. The JV went on to take first place at the 8-team Hudson Junior Varsity Tournament Saturday, defeating River Falls 25-17, 25-17, Prescott 25-16, 25-23, and Amery, 25-16, 25-12 in pool play before clinching first place with a 25-16, 25-19 win over Menomonie in the title match.
