St. Croix River bridge backers gathering for celebration Saturday
Backers of a new bridge over the St. Croix River will get a chance to celebrate recent successes at an event planned for Saturday.
U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), U.S. Rep. Ron Kind (D-Wis.), U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann (d-Minn.) and U.s. Rep. Sean Duffy (R-Wis.) are among the politicians who will converge on the Stillwater bridge from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 3, to mark the passage of a congressional bill that will allow for the eventual construction of a new four-lane span.
On Thursday, the U.S. House voted 339-80 in favor of a measure that would exempt a new bridge from restrictions in the Federal Wild and Scenic Riverway Act. The U.S. Senate previously approved the measure in January.
The elected officials will be on hand to meet people, walk the bridge and conduct a press event at the park in front of the bridge.
Here's a tentative schedule so far:
10:00 Supporters and friends gather at the Water Street Inn
10:30 Sen. Klobuchar and Rep. Duffy arrive at the Inn, to meet supporters and walk the bridge.
11:00 Rep. Duffy departs; Sen. Klobuchar greets attendees.
11:30 Rep. Bachmann arrives; Bachmann, Klobuchar and Kind conduct news conference in front of the bridge.
According to organizers for the event, the public is invited to attend the outside gathering and press event.
