Sun Prairie and Steven Point battle for Division 1 state baseball title
Sun Prairie and Stevens Point will play Thursday for the Division 1 state high school spring baseball crown near Appleton.
Defending champion Sun Prairie advanced to the title game by crushing Stoughton 15-5 in a semifinal ended in five innings by the mercy rule.
Connor Funnell was a homer short of the cycle as Sun Prairie scored in all five innings.
Stevens Point made the title game with a 14-5 win over Bay Port. Sterling King and Cal Giese each drove in three runs, and Point starter Austin Schulfer struck out 12 in six innings for the win.
In the Division 1 quarterfinals earlier in the day, Sun Prairie eliminated Waunakee 4-0. Stoughton edged Neenah 4-3. Bay Port pounded Hartford 14-0. And Stevens Point advanced with a 4-2 win over Kenosha Bradford.
Semifinals were set for Wednesday in three other divisions, with new champions to be crowned in all three.
The Division 4 semis began at 8 a.m. at Fox Cities Stadium. Greenwood played Wausaukee, and Potosi took on Lake Country Lutheran.
The Division 3 semis were held Wednesday afternoon. Osseo-Fairchild played Oconto, and Westby faced Deerfield.
In Wednesday night's Division 2 semifinals, Ellsworth went against Green Bay Notre Dame, and Lodi played Waupun. Title games are set for Thursday in all four divisions.
