Trial begins for man accused in 1980 murders of high school sweethearts
River Falls Wisconsin 2815 Prairie Drive / P.O. Box 25 54022

A man who once headed the FBI's most wanted list is due in Jefferson County Circuit Court this afternoon.

A judge will decide if there's enough evidence to put Edward Edwards on trial for the 1980 slayings of Tim Hack and Kelly Drew.

Edwards, 76, was a maintenance man at the restaurant in Sullivan where the 19-year-old high school sweethearts were last seen alive.

Edwards was leading a quiet life in Louisville, Ky., when authorities said they discovered his DNA on the victims and he was arrested late last month.

He's charged with two counts of first degree murder.

Edwards spent a number of years robbing banks, stealing cars and conducting scams around the country.

And he's been named as a suspect in other killings. But he promised to end his life of crime after leaving a federal prison in 1967.

Edwards even wrote a book about his crimes, hoping it would discourage others from doing what he did.
