Two killed in Monday evening accident
Two Somerset young adults were killed in a one-car rollover near Johannesburg (between Somerset, New Richmond and Star Prairie) Monday night. Two others in the vehicle were seriously injured and transported to Regions Hospital in St. Paul.
Sheriff Dennis Hillstead said none of the four was wearing seat belts and three of the four were ejected from the vehicle when it rolled several times on County C, east of 100th Street in the town of Star Prairie.
Killed in the crash were back seat passengers Daishonna Payne, 17, and Alan Alwin, 26, both of Somerset. Injured were Edgar Rodriguez, 17, and driver Austin Pederson, 18, both of Somerset.
Payne was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Croix County medical examiner; Alwin died while being transported to Regions.
Pederson's 1995 Volkswagen Jetta III was eastbound on County C at about 7:30 p.m. He apparently lost control going around a curve; the car slid sideways entering the ditch and rolled several times.
Responding to the scene in addition to the St. Croix County Sheriff's Department were New Richmond Fire and Rescue, Star Prairie Fire and First Responders and the Wisconsin State Patrol.
The fatalities are the seventh and eighth in the county in 2009. There were 11 fatal accidents on county roads last year.
