Two UW schools in NCAA Elite Eight
For the first time ever, two WIAC schools have made the Elite Eight in the NCAA Division 3 softball tournament.
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater joined UW-Eau Claire in the national finals Monday by winning the Rock Island Regional.
The Warhawks beat top-seeded De Pauw 6-2 in eight innings.
Liz Yucius homered and singled for UW-Whitewater and Jessica Stang threw an eight-hitter to improve her record to 12-4.
UW-Whitewater improved to 35-9 as it made the national finals for the first time in 21 years. The Warhawks earned the fifth seed and will open against No. 4 Cortland State of New York on Friday afternoon in Salem, Va.
UW-Eau Claire was given the No.3 seed and will face No. 6 Ithaca of New York on Friday afternoon.
UW-Eau Claire advanced by winning its regional on Sunday.
The nationals will have a double-elimination format, just like the eight regionals did. It will run through next Monday or Tuesday.
