A Stillwater, Minn. man -- an off-duty Washington County Sheriff's Department supervisor -- was struck in the face, neck and shoulder by pellets fired by a White Bear Lake, Minn., man who was hunting in the Town of Somerset early Tuesday, April 30.

Sheriff John Shilts said Jerry Cusick, 53, a commander in the department, was on private property, scouting for birds when he was struck by a shot fired by Anthony Cardarelli.

Shilts said Cusick made his way to a neighbor's residence where was transported by Lakeview EMS to Regions Hospital in St. Paul.

He was listed in good condition Tuesday afternoon.

Cusick, who WashCo Sheriff Bill Hutton described as an avid hunter, has been with the department for 28 years. He is responsible for the courts division, water patrol and parks, trails and the chaplain corps.

According to the St. Croix County Sheriff's office, the incident occurred at around 7:24 a.m. Deputies and emergency responders were dispatched to the 1900 block of 80th Street.

"There is no information at this point that Cardarelli intended to shoot a person," said St. Croix Sheriff John Shilts. "However, I have great concern over the fact that Cardarelli did not properly identify his intended target prior to shooting."

The incident remains under investigation by the sheriff's department and wardens with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
