A longtime New Richmond police officer died Oct. 26 at his home.

The death of Sgt. Scott Turbeville, 39, a 12-year member of the local police department, has been ruled an "accidental death" by the St. Croix County Sheriff's Department.

"We do not suspect any foul play," said Hillstead. He added, "It was not a suicide."

Turbeville graduated from Central St. Croix High School in Hammond in 1990.

After high school, he enrolled at Chippewa Valley Technical College and completed his degree in law enforcement.

According to his obituary, Turbeville's first job was with the St. Croix County Sheriff's Department. He spent a number of years with the Minnesota Department of Corrections in Lino Lakes, Minn.

Turbeville has worked with the New Richmond Police Department since 1998, starting as a part-time officer. He joined the department fulltime in 2003 and was named patrol sergeant in 2008. He worked the midnight shift for the department.

"Scott was a very family-oriented individual," said New Richmond Police Chief Mark Samelstad. "His wife and kids meant the world to him."

Samelstad said the department is pulling together to get through the grief they are feeling as a group.

Turbeville and his wife, Tracey, have two children, Emma and Ethan.

At Saturday's funeral service, more than 100 police officers, sheriff's deputies, State Patrol officers, corrections officials and emergency responders from the area attended.

Law enforcement and emergency personnel lined the street outside First Lutheran Church following the service to serve as an honor guard for Turbeville. The group saluted as Turbeville's casket was taken to the waiting hearse. A bagpipe musician performed "Amazing Grace" for the recessional.

During the funeral service, Turbeville was remembered as a fun-loving individual who enjoyed making everyone around him laugh.
