UPDATE: Raiders cap first undefeated football season since 1966; host ECM in playoff opener
Hudson dominated Menomonie in a battle between the only two undefeated teams in the Big Rivers Conference Friday night, Oct. 12, posting a 34-7 victory at Williams Stadium to claim their second Big Rivers Conference championship and first undefeated regular season since 1966.
After a scoreless first quarter, Dan Loughney ran for one touchdown and Mike Hommes scored a pair of TDs to stake the Raiders to a 20-0 halftime lead.
Menomonie capitalized on a Raider fumble on the opening drive of the second half and scored two plays later to make it a 20-7 game, but Joe Kelly scored on a 2-yard run late in the third quarter, and Miles Lewis returned a punt 30-yards for a touchdown with seven minutes remaining in the game to make the final 34-7.
The win marks the fifth straight victory for the Raiders over Menomonie. Hudson finishes the regular season with a record of 8-0 and earns its first BRC title since 2009 with a conference mark of 7-0. Menomonie finishes 7-1, 6-1 in the BRC.
UPDATE: Big Rivers Conference champion and undefeated Hudson will host Eau Claire Memorial in a Level 1 WIAA Division 1 football playoff game Friday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. at Newton Field.
The Raiders, 8-0 overall, received the No. 2 seed in the 8-team Group A bracket. Eau Claire Memorial (4-4,) earned the No. 7 seed. Hudson defeated Eau Claire Memorial earlier this season, 48-20, Sept. 21 in Eau Claire.
Other Group A games include top-seeded Appleton North (8-0,) against No. 8 Superior ((4-4,), No. 3. Bay Port (7-1) against No. 6 D.C. Everest (4-4), and No. 4 Stevens Point (7-1) against No. 5 Green Bay Preble (7-1).
A Hudson win against Eau Claire Memorial would pit them against the winner of the Bay Port-D.C. Everest game in a Level 2 matchup either Friday or Saturday, Oct. 26-27.
