UPDATE: Somerset woman dies in Monday crash

A car left County Road H and became submerged in water, resulting in the death of the motorist. The name of the victim has not yet been released.

A Somerset woman is dead following an accident along County Road H west of Star Prairie.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene of the one-vehicle incident at the Cedar Creek bridge along the roadway at around 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 30.

A 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GT was found completely submerged and only the rear axle of the vehicle was visible from the roadway, according to St. Croix County Sheriff John Shilts.

Ryan A Nelson, 30, Somerset, was westbound on County Road H when the vehicle struck a guardrail and overturned, coming to rest in Cedar Creek. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Croix County Medical Examiner.

Dive crews were on hand to recover the body of the motorists and pull the car from the water. Water rescue personnel with the New Richmond Fire Department recovered items that were in the river.

Also on the scene were the St. Croix County Sheriff's Department, Star Prairie Police, St. Croix EMS Dive Team and New Richmond Ambulance Service.

The incident is the first traffic fatality in St. Croix County in 2012. The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff's office.
