UWRF men win Falcon Invite title; HHS grad Dwyer shines in decathlon

Freshmen Mike Sandle won two events and set a school record in the triple jump and Hudson High School graduate Gabe Dwyer finished 11th in the decathlon to help lead the UW-River Falls men's track and field team to a first place finish Saturday afternoon at the Falcon Invitational at Ramer Field.

UWRF scored 221 points to win the 12-team men's title.

Sandle, the reigning NCAA indoor triple jump champion, set a new school record of 49-feet, 1 ½-inches to break the old mark of 47-8 set by Bruce Beckel in 1978. The Eden Prairie, Minn. native also took first in the high jump by clearing 6-6 ¾.

Dwyer, a freshman at UWRF, won the decathlon's 1500 meter run with a time of 4 minutes, 38.53 seconds and cleared 12-11 ½ to place fourth in the decathlon pole vault. He finished with a total of 4,975 points to place 11th overall.

Freshman Michael Congdon of Hudson added a seventh place throw of 143-09 in the javelin while junior Michael Heth finished 19th in the 400 meter dash with a time of 56.34 seconds.

In the women's competition, junior Alyssa Rasmussen of Delano, Minn. won the 400 meter dash in 56.94 seconds and took second in the 200 in 25.21 seconds to help the Falcons to a third place team finish.

Both the Falcon men's and women's teams will compete at the Phil Esten Challenge at UW-La Crosse this Friday, April 20.

Softball sweeps Superior

The Falcon softball team posted a pair of shutouts over UW-Superior to sweep a WIAC doubleheader against the Yellowjackets Saturday, April 14 at Ramer Field.

Pitchers Rose Tusa and Abbie Morris combined on a two-hitter as the Falcons took the opener, 10-0. Tusa went the distance in the nightcap to improve to 13-4 on the season as the Falcons extended their winning streak to seven with a 4-0 victory.

Ashley Goettl and Amanda Ryder hit back-to-back homers in the first inning of the opener and UWRF scored in every inning of the five-inning contest on their way to the 10-0 win. Patti Olson added a homer in the fourth inning and was 3-for-3 at the plate as the Falcons outhit the Yellowjackets, 11-2.

Tusa struck out five and walked just one in the second game to record her fourth shutout and seventh complete game win of the season. Hayley Buchanan was 2-for-2 with a run scored and Ryder had two RBI to lead the UWRF offense.
