Valley Cartage earns Carrier of the Year Award from Andersen Corp.
Andersen Corp. Vice President Lance Whitacre had high praise for Valley Cartage when he presented the Hudson-based transportation company with a Carrier of the Year Award last week.
"You earn our business every day," said Whitacre, who is in charge of order management and logistics for Andersen.
The award was for less-than-a-truckload shipping service provided by Valley Cartage. It is the third straight year that Valley Cartage has received the award from the large Bayport, Minn., window manufacturer.
Whitacre said that more than 99 percent of its shipments with Valley Cartage arrived on time and that there were no claims for damaged products over the past year.
"You are a great partner for us. Thank you for what you have done. It's having an impact on our business," Whitacre said.
Vahan Badalow, Andersen's director of transportation and logistics strategy, complimented Valley Cartage for its good equipment, safety record and friendly service.
"You have always found a way to say yes," Badalow told the Valley Cartage officials.
Andersen Corp. provided lunch for the workers at Valley Cartage's terminal and warehouse in St. Croix Business Park in appreciation for their service.
The company that Lloyd Gilbert started in Hudson in 1935 has greatly expanded its services and experienced significant growth in recent years.
Todd Gilbert is now president and CEO of the third generation family-owned company. His father, Jerry Gilbert, is chairman of the board.
In addition to its corporate headquarters and terminal at 3011 Enloe St. in Hudson, Valley Cartage now has terminals at Duluth, Mankato and St. Cloud in Minnesota, as well as Fargo, N.D., and La Crosse.
"We can handle any of your shipping needs, said Adam Danielson, the company's director of sales and marketing.
That now includes imports and exports.
"We have the people and proven contacts in place to handle the import and export of your international shipments, anywhere, any time," a company brochure promises. One of Valley Cartage's primary providers in the Far East has more than 15 years of experience handling shipments between China and the United States.
Valley Cartage has four major units:
1. LTL (less than truckload) regional, national and global shipping;
2. Expedited delivery of time-sensitive, service-critical or high-value shipments by ground anywhere in the lower 48 states;
3. Comprehensive logistics and supply chain management services including ocean, air, intermodal and rail transportation; and
4. Temperature-controlled warehousing for both domestic and international shipping and receiving.
The company provides one-day LTL shipping to a seven-state area and two Canadian provinces. Its LTL shipments reach the eastern two-thirds of the United States and anywhere in three Canadian provinces within two days.
The company's overall on-time delivery rate is 98.8 percent and its claim-free service ratio is 99.75 percent.
Director of Operations Bruce Anderson said Valley Cartage has its own feeder system for drivers. Employees who begin as dock workers can advance and go through training to become straight-truck drivers, and then long-truck drivers.
He said training from within has provided the company with quality drivers, one of whom was recently honored as one the best drivers in the nation.
Valley Cartage has 222 non-union employees, including 113 company drivers, according to a company fact sheet.
The fact sheet says the company has 89 tractors, six lift-gate equipped straight trucks, one sprinter van and 201 semitrailers.
"We're never going to give up our assets," Steve McFarland, Valley Cartage's vice president of sales and marketing, told the Andersen officials.
McFarland said Valley Cartage's goal is to expand its geographic footprint.
