VIDEO: Newcomers win Hot Air Smoosh Board competition
A team of newcomers won the 2013 Hot Air Affair Smoosh Board championship.
Team iTed (Isaac and Ella Young, Tait Saterbak and Dmitri Roth) defeated the Frequent Fliers (Melanie Berg, Erin Rabideaux, Julie Goetzke and Rachel Markie) in the championship race.
The Frequent Fliers took an early lead in the race, but fell making the U-turn at the halfway point in the race, and couldn't get up.
The perennial winners of the Smoosh Board competition, the Smoosh Bucklers, didn't compete this year. Race announcer John Knutson said they were on a South American tour.
The absence of the Smoosh Bucklers, along with the always competitive Red Hot Hilkes team of Hilke family siblings, opened the field to other hopefuls.
The upstart iTed youngsters dashed those hopes.
Three of the four members of the Frequent Fliers also competed last year, under the name the Master Spitfires.
Like last year, they came in second in the race competition, but won the audience's vote for best costumes.
Among the teams competing this year were two that traveled from Chicago.
The members of Mexican Winter (Tina Rice, Molly Ullenberg, Kathy Soroka and Gabriel Pontones) hailed from Mexico City, Washington, D.C., Chicago and Roberts.
One of the team members said her college roommate was from Roberts. She and a group from Chicago first drove to Hudson to take in the Hot Air Affair five years ago. They had so much fun they've returned every year since for the celebration.
