Water ski show returns to Hudson Booster Days
It's been 34 years since a water ski show was part of Booster Days.
Now it's back, just like the Donna Summers disco songs that Boogie Wonderland will perform Thursday night.
The River Rats Water-ski Show Team will perform at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 4, on the St. Croix River next to the Lakefront Park beach.
The audience can expect a lot of thrills and maybe a few high-speed spills, according to Meghan Anderson, who handles the publicity for the Minneapolis-based water-ski team.
"They can expect big pyramids, fast barefoot skiing, up to 30 people on the water at one time doing all kinds of different things," Anderson said.
Forty to 50 water-skiers in all will be part of the performance.
The theme of the River Rats' 2009 show is "Raturday Night Live." It's based on some of the classic "Saturday Night Live" TV show skits.
The show is powered by three or four tow boats, the largest with three engines and a total of 450 h.p.
There's music, colorful costumes and an announcer to explain what's happening on the water.
A collection will be taken up at intermission to cover the expenses of the all-volunteer water-ski team. The team isn't being paid by the Boosters to come to Hudson.
In fact, the team members pay dues to belong to the organization.
"We all do it because we love water-skiing - pure and simple," Anderson said.
Water-ski shows were last a part of Booster Days from 1969 to 1975.
