WIAA boys' state basketball tournament under way in Madison
Germantown High School took a 54-game winning streak into the boys' state high school basketball tournament that began Thursday in Madison.
The top-ranked Warhawks will go for their second straight Division 1 title. Their next challenge is a semi-final contest against Oshkosh North Friday night.
The tournament opened at 1:30 p.m. Thursday with the Division 5 semi-finals at the Kohl Center.
Unbeaten Green Bay Northeast Wisconsin Lutheran defeated Drummond 62-59 in the tournament opener.
Randolph topped Elmwood 46-37 in the second Division 5 semi-final.
The Division 4 semi-finals were scheduled for Thursday night. Auburndale plays Amherst. And then undefeated Cuba City goes against defending Division 4 champion Whitefish Bay Dominican.
Semi-finals in the other three divisions will be played Friday - and title games in all five divisions are set for Saturday.
At least two new state champions will be crowned. Last year's Division 3 titlist Brillion lost in the sectionals, as did Division 5 defending champ Sheboygan Lutheran.
The games can be viewed on cable channel 6 (WQOW-TV, Eau Claire) in Hudson. WQOW-TV also is streaming the games live on its website.
