Wisconsin retailers finding $$ online

Wisconsin retailers are part of a big shopping boom on the Internet.

According to the Forrester Research group, shoppers spent $220 billion on line last year, 25 percent more than in 2005.

Travel is still No. 1, hands down. But shoes and clothing surpassed computers as the No. 2 item.

The Mason Shoe Co., of Chippewa Falls launched a shoe-mall Web site last fall. And its online sales grew 44 percent, to around $68 million.

Kohl's of Menomonee Falls has doubled the size of its E-commerce distribution center in Monroe, Ohio, and it plans to relaunch its Web site later this year to make it easier to navigate.

But it's not like we're buying everything online. The Web accounts for only 7 percent of all U.S. retail sales. And Forrester says this year's increase should be a little smaller, only around 18 percent.
