The fire Tuesday evening in an upstairs duplex unit at 724 Ninth St. in Hudson started in a futon or sofa in the living room, according to Hudson Fire Chief Jim Frye.

Frye said Rachel Guidarelli reported that she was in the bathroom bathing when she smelled smoke and came out to find the couch on fire.

Three children also were in the home when the fire started, Fry said. All of the occupants were able to escape the house unharmed.

Guidarelli, believed to be the mother of the children, called 911 to report the blaze at 8:17 p.m.

Frye said flames were coming out of the second story windows of the house when the Hudson Fire Department arrived.

Firefighters quickly brought the fire under control, Frye said, but were on the scene until 10:50 p.m. checking to see that the last embers were out.

The fire caused considerable damage to the upstairs duplex unit, he said, and water used to extinguish the blaze leaked into the downstairs unit.

Fyre said he has turned the investigation into the cause of the fire over to the Hudson Police Department.

He said that contrary to a rumor circulating in Hudson Tuesday night, the fire was unrelated to a car crash that happened half an hour earlier at I-94 Exit 1.
