UW-River Falls' senior forward Jason Yuel of Winnipeg, Manitoba has been named the 2012 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Co-Scholar-Athlete, and five Falcons have been named to the NCHA All-Academic team.
Yuel and UW-Eau Claire's Tyler Jundt shared the league's Scholar-Athlete award.
Yuel has been named to the UWRF Dean's List eight times. He has captained the Falcons for three seasons and has won multiple awards for excellence in economics at the university.
Yuel has been a volunteer speaker at the local middle school and has participated in "Bike for Kids" programs. This year Yuel was voted to the All-NCHA team after posting 27 points in 27 games for the Falcons and leading in offense on a team that was ranked as high as third in the nation this season.
Yuel was named to the All-Academic team for the third straight year. Senior Tad Norris of Snowmass, Col., who is majoring in health and human performance, was named for the second straight year. Junior Jake Calleja of New Richmond, freshman Jake Olson of Trego and senior Geoff Shewmake of Chicago were all named for the first time.
Norris, a defenseman, is majoring in health and human performance. Calleja, a forward, is majoring in business administration. Olson, a forward, is majoring in physics, and Shewmake, a forward, is majoring in accounting.
To be named to the team a player must have achieved sophomore academic standing, have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2 and be recommended by his head coach.
