Phipps stages 'Joseph' next month

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, will be performed July 10-Aug. 2 at The Phipps Center for the Arts.

"Joseph" was the first collaboration between the famed composer and lyricist. Set to a high-energy mixture of musical styles, from country western and calypso to pop and rock 'n' roll, the tale is based on an Old Testament story has been a family favorite since its debut in the early '90s.

In Canaan, a man named Jacob lives with his 12 sons. One of his sons, Joseph, has received a colorful coat from his father while the others wear sheepskin, which infuriates the brothers. In addition, Joseph's apparent ability to interpret dreams is the last straw as they foretell that he is destined to rule over them. To get rid of Joseph, and to prevent the dreams from coming true, the brothers sell Joseph as a slave to a passer-by who takes him to Egypt.
