Walk raises awareness of domestic violence

The annual Domestic Violence Awareness Walk is Saturday beginning at Glen Park in River Falls.

Pledges are not required to participate in the two-mile walk through downtown River Falls.

The event also includes food, games, prizes and more. Prizes include Packers, Brewers and Vikings merchandise and gift certificates. Registration begins at 9 a.m. followed by a program at 10 a.m.

The event benefits Turningpoint for Victims of Domestic

and Sexual Violence, Inc.

Walkers bringing in pledges totaling $25 or more will receive a t-shirt.

'Friends' have raffle

The 2009 St. Croix Animal Friends raffle drawing was Sept. 21 at Croix Valley Veterinary Hospital in Hudson. The prize winner of two tickets to the Packer/Viking game at the Metrodome was Chuck Edson of Hudson. The raffle raised over $1,000 for the organization's work to build an animal adoption and education center in the county. At the drawing were, from left, hospital staff members Rhonda Armbruster, Dr. David Datt, Nicole Parker and Dr. Vicki Datt.

A Tour of the Night Sky is scheduled Oct. 6, 20 and 27 at UW-River Falls in Ag Science Hall Planetarium and Observatory, 271 Centennial Science Hall. Cost of the three classes is $59.

Professor Eileen Korenic will teach attendees how to use a star map to locate stars and constellations, find objects within and beyond the solar system, and discuss the list of Messier objects. The class includes time in both the classroom and planetarium.

An evening with Mark Twain

The River Falls Public Library's annual community read program offers an evening with Mark Twain, as interpreted by River Falls actor Rick Burgsteiner. This free program is at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1 in the library lower level community room.

Art St. Croix submissions

Art St. Croix is accepting submissions for poems, essays, songs and memoirs from disabled adults in the St. Croix Valley.

The submissions are for Art St. Croix's sixth annual reading "In Your Words or Theirs," scheduled Nov. 15 from 1-3 p.m. at Boutwell's Landing in Oak Park Heights, Minn.

The theme is "deep river, green valley, St. Croix."

Space offers cooking

Rhonda Zontelli is offering cooking classes at The Space, 156 High St., New Richmond.

Classes are Thursdays for 6-8:30 p.m.; cost is $50 per session or $120 for all three:

--Oct. 1, Outdoor Cooking, Zontelli and Cookie Arne;

--Oct. 15, Ethnic Experience, Zontelli and guest chef;

--Nov. 12, Home for the Holidays/Food as Gift Giving.

Participants are invited to attend a celebration and exchange Dec. 3 for the holiday season; the session is not included in the cost listed.

Music in the valley

Valley Chamber Chorale is presenting a free evening of music at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 115 Fourth St. N., Stillwater, Minn.

Performing are the Valley Chamber Chorale, Music St. Croix, the St. Croix Jazz Orchestra, The Trinity Concert Series and the St. Croix Concert Series.
