Charlotte was a fawn at the time, and Marvin Graff of Lake Geneva took her in and brought her back to health. In August, DNR staff members told Graff that the tame deer needed to be euthanized since she comes from an area with chronic wasting disease.
The 49-year-old Graff refused to give her up, and now he’s charged in Walworth County with a criminal misdemeanor of taking unauthorized deer from the wild. He’s due in court Wednesday, Dec. 21.
“Chicago Tribune” columnist John Kass wrote about the case yesterday and called it “the worst Christmas story ever.” Once the governor learned about it, he ordered the DNR to save Charlotte.
DNR spokesman Bill Cosh says officials are thinking about placing the deer in a wildlife rehab facility.
