Authorities confirmed Jan. 10 that a body pulled from the Fox River in Oshkosh is that of 21-year-old Michael Philbin, son of Green Bay Packers' offensive coordinator Joe Philbin.
The young man was a student at Ripon College and disappeared early Jan. 7 after visiting with friends at UW Oshkosh. Winnebago County sheriff's divers had been searching the river, after getting a report that somebody fell through the ice around 2:30 a.m. Sunday.
Divers found the body about early this week about 30 yards from the shore. Foul play is not suspected, but police are still investigating. Initial reports say the cause of death was a “freshwater drowning.”
The Packers released a statement saying everyone’s thoughts and prayers are with the Philbins; the team asked that people respect the family’s privacy.
Funeral services for Michael Philbin will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 13 at Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Green Bay with visitation starting 9 a.m. that day and taking place 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12.
