A logger was killed Monday, Jan. 30 in Chippewa County when he was hit by a moving log skidder while clearing fallen trees.

Sheriff's deputies said two men were attaching cables to the downed trees at the bottom of a hill, and the skidder machine slid down the hill and pinned the victim against a tree.

A 34-year-old man was killed, and his name was not immediately released. The other logger was not hurt. The incident happened just before 2 p.m. on county-owned land near Cornell in the Chippewa County town of Cleveland.

Officials said the two men placed the skidder on the top of the hill, applied the brake, and braced it against a tree stump before it slid down. Deputies said the U.S. Occupational Safety-and-Health Administration was notified about the mishap.
