A stray arrow struck 7-year-old Aryanna Schneeberg of Campbellsport in the back as she played with friends in her neighborhood May 20.

The arrow wounded her left lung, spleen, stomach, liver and diaphragm. Authorities call it an accident and are still looking for the shooter. Shortly after the incident, sheriff’s deputies confiscated a bow and arrows from house about 80 yards away.

The weapons were taken to the state crime lab for analysis; officials want to find out why and how the arrow hit happened.

The girl is at Milwaukee Children’s Hospital in fair condition. That’s after pediatric surgeon John Densmore spent 2 ½ hours removing the arrow. He expects the girl to be hospitalized for another week or two.

The surgeon said Schneeberg was fortunate that the arrow entered where it did in the left side of her back. Had it been just two centimeters away, the doctor said there could have been real problems.

Her doctors do not expect the little girl to have any permanent dysfunction as a result of the accident.
