The EPA has reached a settlement with La Crosse-based Dairyland Power utility over coal-fired power plants that were polluting the air. Dairyland has agreed to invest about $156 million dollars in the settlement revealed online last week.
Dairyland had been accused of failing to get the needed permit or install the best pollution-control technology when it modified two coal-fired plants in alma and Genoa starting eight years ago. Dairyland will spend $150 million installing new pollution-control devices and pay almost $1 million in fines.
The rest of the money will be spent on improving the environment and human health conditions around the plants.
