DNR proposes wolf-hunt quota

Rules proposed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources would allow hunters to kill nearly ¼ of the wolves living in this state this winter.

The wolf population is estimated at between 815 and 880. DNR rules will allow the statewide quota of 201 wolves to be killed.

Complaints about attacks on farm animals by the wolves have some saying the quota is too conservative. Many experts and local farmers think a population of 350 wolves would be most appropriate.

The Obama administration removed the wolves from the endangered species list earlier this year. A few days after that, Republican lawmakers introduced a bill setting up this hunt.

Democrats questioned whether the hunt was necessary and said the bill’s provisions would wind up killing too many wolves.
