More Hispanics are calling Wisconsin home.

The U.S. Census Bureau says the number of Latino residents has increased 41 percent between 2000 and July 1.

Almost 272,000 Hispanics now live in Wisconsin, and they make up 4.9 percent of the state’s population.

The growth of Hispanics is almost twice that of Asians, and 4.5 times that of African-Americans.

Just more than 110,000 Hispanics live in Milwaukee County, up 34 percent from 2000.

State Assembly Democrat Pedro Colon of Milwaukee says the values of Latinos are closely aligned to those of other Wisconsinites.

He says the Hispanic culture rewards hard work and its growth has stabilized Milwaukee’s overall population.

Tony Baez of Milwaukee’s Council for the Spanish Speaking says his group is serving more folks than ever.
