The Toro Company plans to lay off 235 people at its plant in Tomah.

Company vice president Sandy Meurlot blamed it on economic conditions the firm has not seen in decades.

About 650 people work at the Tomah plant, which makes turf maintenance equipment for properties like golf courses.

Toro says it hopes to recall the laid-off workers in the future.

Last year, the company froze its hiring, eliminated overtime and adopted a voluntary retirement program.
