Madison golfer Jerry Kelly won his first PGA tournament in seven years Sunday.

Kelly took the Zurich Classic of New Orleans by one stroke over Rory Sabbatini, Charlie Wi, and Charles Howell III.

Steve Stricker of Madison tied for seventh.

Kelly shot a one under par 71 in his final round, and finished at 14 under 274.

Stricker had a five under 67 to close out at 11 under 277.

Kelly had the third round lead, but he fell three strokes behind Howell in Sunday’s early going.

But Kelly roared back with a pair of clutch birdies on the back nine. And on the 18th, his playing partner Steve Marino took himself out of contention by placing his tee shot in a fairway bunker.

Kelly, 42, went on to seal his first victory in 200 tournaments since 2002, and his third win overall on the PGA Tour.

Kelly credited his brother-in-law, Wisconsin men’s golf coach Jim Schuman, with helping to re-build his swing.
