State Assembly Speaker Rep. Mike Huebsch, R-West Salem, says he hopes to see a deal on the state budget shortfall in the next several days.
Huebsch told the WisconsinEye cable network he thinks Republican and Democratic leaders have made progress in their private talks recently.
He says he's been encouraged by everyone's willingness to work together.
The state expects a shortfall of more than a $0.5 billion in its budget.
Last year, lawmakers and Gov. Doyle didn't reach a deal on the budget until after a stalemate that lasted about four months.
