Wisconsin News
Up to 150 workers will be laid off next month at the Chrysler engine plant in Kenosha.

Up to 150 workers will be laid off next month at the Chrysler engine plant in Kenosha.

Production has been relatively stable on two lines in Kenosha. But spokesman Max Gates says the output on both lines will be reduced indefinitely starting on March 23, as the result of declining sales.

He could not say how long the layoffs would last.

Chrysler employs about 800 people in Kenosha. All but 170 of them are unionized.

The company was planning to build a more modern 6-cylinder engine to replace those now being made. But those plans have stalled.

Chrysler and General Motors have borrowed $17 billion from the federal government to keep going. Wednesday, Chrysler’s top officials met with White House officials to and get more help.
