The Brewers hold a one-game lead in the National League Central division after they lost 1-0 to the New York Mets Wednesday at Miller Park.
Second-place St. Louis gained some ground when it beat San Francisco 2-1 at home Wednesday. T
he Cubs are fourth in the Central, a game below .500 and 3.5 behind Milwaukee.
Wednesday, the Brewers wasted a stellar pitching effort by Yovani Gallardo.
He struck out a career-high 12 Mets in seven innings, giving up a run on five hits with a pair of walks.
Ryan Braun went 2-4, as the Brewers out-hit New York 7-5.
But none of Milwaukee’s hits went for extra bases.
Ryan Church singled home the game’s only run in the sixth inning to score Luis Castillo, who doubled.
Gallardo fell to 8-5.
Mike Pelfrey got the win to improve to 6-3. He struck out six in seven and two-thirds innings.
Francisco Rodriguez earned his 21st save, as the Mets ended a five-game losing streak.
The Brewers capped off a 5-4 home-stand. Braun says the Brewers are playing well and for now, it only matters that they’re in first.
Tonight at Wrigley, right-hander Seth McClung will start against Cubs’ right-hander Ryan Dempster.
