Mayor says deer harvest is necessary

A deer harvest was completed last week in the city of Hudson in an attempt to thin the deer population within the city limits. DNR-approved marksmen were in the city Wednesday and Thursday, March 12 and 13.

A deer harvest was completed last week in the city of Hudson in an attempt to thin the deer population within the city limits. DNR-approved marksmen were in the city Wednesday and Thursday, March 12 and 13.

A similar event two years ago was somewhat controversial, and this year’s also stirred strong feeling from people on both sides of the issue.

“It’s a no-win situation,” said Mayor Jack Breault. “But the deer do cause problems, including many car-deer accidents within the city limits.”

Breault said permission was granted by the DNR, residents of the Birkmose Hill neighborhood, Willow River Cemetery and the Hudson Golf Club.

At least two council members, Lee Wyland and Randy Morrissette II, expressed concerns that the latest hunt was not discussed at the council level.
