The play by Mark Frattaroli is an adaptation of the award-winning children’s book by Natalie Babbitt. The story follows young Winnie as she leaves her grandmother’s house for an adventure in the woods. There she meets Jesse Tuck whose family has a secret: They have stumbled upon a spring whose waters grant immortality. The family strives to hide themselves and the spring from the sinister Man in the Yellow Hat who is desperate to discover the origin of their perpetual youth. It is left for Winnie to discover that the only thing that is truly everlasting is love.
The cast consists of one girl age 10–14, two boys ages 16-22, two women ages 35-60, and three men ages 40-60. There will also be a chorus of between two to six actors, ages 10-18. The chorus roles are not gender specific.
Rehearsals are Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. beginning April 5. Performances are May 16–20 on Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 7 p.m., Sunday at 2 p.m. and Tuesday for a school matinee.
All auditioning will be asked to read from the script. Actors should come with a complete list of rehearsal conflicts.
Directing the play is Rick Fields, who recently staged the holiday production of “A Little House Christmas” at The Phipps. He also directed “The Pied Piper of Hamelin” and “The Adventures of Robin Hood” for The Phipps Children’s Theater.
