I just returned from a recycling plant in St. Paul. As a result of recycling about 25 small engines, five large snowblower frames, assorted steel, a pint of copper and a half-pint of brass, I received an $80.96 check for 994 pounds of metal.
Expenses incurred while collecting and processing the scrap metals include about 75 hours labor, 50 miles of travel and several broken tools. Oh yes, did I mention I had to pay to wash the car and trailer after driving through the foot-deep mud holes at the scrap yard? I chose to go after a heavy freeze, but their mud holes hadn’t frozen much.
If anybody has a good idea about how to financially break even by recycling small engines, I’d be happy to hear about it.
