The St. Croix Underage Drinking Coalition completed a wave of compliance checks in several municipalities in St. Croix County during the first week of April.
The percentage of successful establishments during this wave of checks increased from the last one.
About 71 percent of the establishments checked were successful in limiting access to alcohol by underage people, and 13 percent failed to limit access. About 16 percent of the establishments were not checked.
This round of checks marks the fifth year of compliance investigations by the coalition.
A compliance check is a tool to identify establishments that sell alcohol to underage youth.
Compliance checks are used for two purposes:
1) To identify, warn and educate establishments that serve or sell alcohol to underage people.
2) To enforce state laws, local ordinances, or both, which are related to those illegal sales.
The coalition has developed a comprehensive compliance check program that identifies infractions of state law as well as training opportunities and is the largest consortium in the state of Wisconsin. Funding for the compliance checks come from grants awarded by the Wisconsin State Patrol, Bureau of Transportation Safety.
