Organ concerts rescheduled

Chris Gorsuch’s performance on April 20 and Dennis James’ concert on May 3 on the Wurlitzer theater pipe organ at The Phipps Center for the Arts have been rescheduled. Gorsuch will now be making his Phipps debut on Saturday, Aug. 23, at 8 p.m. James will now perform on Sunday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m.

Private string lessons

Private violin, viola and cello lessons for students ages 7-adult are given year-round. Sarah Bertsch and Sarah Foster offer violin lessons. For more information, contact Bertsch at (715) 381-5735.

Dance parties

Tom Larson will offer dance parties Saturdays, April 19 and May 17, 7:30-10 p.m., in the dance studio with a lesson from 7:30 to 8:30. Dancers of all experience levels are welcome. Admission is $10 per person.

Yoga classes

Vinyasa Flow yoga classes continue on Thursdays from 6:30–8 p.m. Beginning yoga is offered Tuesdays and Fridays from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Classes are ongoing and may be taken at any time. Punch cards may be purchased for $100 for 10 classes. The cards are good for any of the five classes offered each week. Students only pay for the classes they attend. Students should wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat.

Summer theater camps

Summer theater camps for students entering grades 3–10 are offered at The Phipps Center.

  • Drama Camp for students entering grades 3 and 4 is Monday-Friday, June 16-20 and again July 21-25, from 9 a.m.-noon each day, for $135. Students will explore acting, creating characters, improvisation and performance techniques.

  • Acting Ensemble for students entering grades 5 and 6 is Monday-Friday, June 16-20 and again July 21-25, from 1-4 p.m. each day, for a fee of $135. Students will work on acting techniques, improvisation, character development and performance techniques.

  • Musical Theater Camp is Monday-Friday, July 7-11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. This camp is an intensive week of training in all aspects of musical theater for students with all levels of experience. The program offers classes in acting, vocal technique, dance and movement, as well as auditioning. The fee is $255. Students should bring a bag lunch.

    Art-making workshops

    The 2008–09 season marks the 25th anniversary of The Phipps Center for the Arts. The focal point of the anniversary celebration will be a community-built parade and presentation in Hudson’s Lakefront Park on Saturday, July 19. A series of free art-making workshops are being offered by Christopher Lutter-Gardella of Puppet Farm Arts, artistic director of this project. These workshops are for artists, educators and all others who want to receive the training to work with a community group of their choosing in the creation of collaborative and eco-conscious projects to support the 25th anniversary event. The second of these workshops is Sunday, April 13, from 1 to 5:30 p.m. at The Phipps.

    Watercolor studio

    An ongoing weekly watercolor studio class for beginning and intermediate watercolorists is offered by Lynne Baur and Carolyn Streed Wednesdays, April 9-30, at The Phipps Center. The morning class meets from 9 to 11:45 a.m. and the afternoon class meets from 12:30 to 3:15 p.m. All students in the classes are invited to bring a brown bag lunch and share paintings and conversation from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. between classes.

    Photography

    The Western Wisconsin Photographic Club meets regularly at The Phipps. For more information, call Paula Ptacek, (715) 425-9315, or Margaret Strehlo, (715) 386-5048. Photographers of all levels of ability and experience are invited to these meetings.

    Healing arts at Hudson Hospital

    Currently on display are the works of Jean Accola, Mary Barrett, David Brock, Robert Cooper, PaTricia Debevec Dillon, Mara Hollenbeck, Kirsten Johnson, Donna Kidd, Sue Kyllonen, Peggy Lauritsen, Elizabeth Papenfuss, Don Pulver, James Sullivan, Marilynn Taylor and Susan Zinschlag.

    The Galleries

    The Annual Area High School Art Exhibition runs through April 20 in The Galleries of The Phipps Center for the Arts. All high school-age students from Western Wisconsin and Eastern Minnesota were invited to submit one recent original work in any media.

    Galleries hours are Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Sunday, noon-4:30 p.m., as well as one hour before and through intermission of all performances in The Phipps theaters.
