Letter: ‘Now’ is too late for HHS

Before the last election, a School Board candidate wrote a letter to the paper declaring: “We do not need a new high school now!”
I agree. We certainly do not need a new high school now. Now is too late. We needed a new high school five years ago so we would be ready for the students who are there now.
The high school enrollment of 1,700 students is currently at 100 percent of building capacity. Just to be clear, 100 percent of capacity means no more kids can fit. The building is maxed out today. And high school enrollment just keeps rising.
At the last School Board meeting, the superintendent unveiled new enrollment projections. Guess what. We’ll have 700 more high school students in the next 10 years.
Do you have elementary-age kids? I’ll bet you’re under the impression that the School Board has been diligently working on this problem. You probably think it will all be fixed when your kids grow up.
Bzzzz. Wrong. No work has been done. Zip, nada and zilch. And the School Board has no plans in the works.
When your kids get to ninth grade in four or five years, there won’t be a new, roomy, state-of-the-art high school waiting for them. Just the same old dysfunctional sardine can.
But look on the bright side. Your kids may be the students who just can’t squeeze in. Hey, no room for Katie and Nick in school. Katie and Nick can stay home! Yippee!
Sorry to break it to you, but this is reality. Get used to it. It’s the cold cruel facts of life in the Hudson School District.
