Badger State drivers slowing down

Wisconsinites are notoriously frugal. Still, there are some who doubt a recent survey which says the Badger State is the only one reporting a noticeable drop in highway speeds due to the high gas prices.

Wisconsinites are notoriously frugal. Still, there are some who doubt a recent survey which says the Badger State is the only one reporting a noticeable drop in highway speeds due to the high gas prices.

It’s not a scientific study by any means.

The Governors Highway Safety Association e-mailed states May 7-9, and asked if they had firm data about folks slowing down.

And if they didn’t, the officials were asked for their observations.

The Association put out a press release May 13. But it didn’t get much play until this morning when WTMJ Radio in Milwaukee chewed it over.

Talk show host Charlie Sykes refused to buy the idea that Wisconsinites are slowing down, and are the only Americans doing so.

Some of his callers didn’t buy it, either.

If it’s happening at all, one businessman said it was probably on the weekends. He said drivers never slow down during the business week, because saving time is more important.

But the highway safety group says you save 20 cents a gallon when you drive 60 instead of 65.
