The St. Croix County Sheriff now says drugs were involved in the deaths of two brothers in late May.
Dennis Hillstead said his officers are still investigating the deaths of Gregory and Jeffrey Knoll.
Their landlord found their remains on May 27 in their apartment in Burkhardt, just northeast of Hudson. Gregory Knoll was 44, and his brother was 41.
Hillstead is not sure if a crime had taken place. He said the case is complicated and he is waiting for toxicology reports that detail everything in the victims' blood.
The sheriff said both were known as partiers and they previously sought treatment for addictions to alcohol and other drugs.
