The Raider tennis team opened the season with several combinations in its lineup, and finished in second place in the eight-team Eau Claire North Invitational.
Hudson beat Eau Claire Regis 7-0 and Unity 6-1, but lost to Eau Claire North 5-2 at the tournament.
Morgan Karras posted three wins at the tourney, 6-1, 6-0 over Unity while playing at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-0 over Regis while paired with Rose Schuler, and 4-6, 6-4 (10-8) over North while back at the fourth singles flight.
“I’ll be experimenting with the lineup in our first few tournaments to try and establish our top ten. I’m sure we’ll be able to count on our five seniors — Molly Krohn, Maddie Karras, Maggie Whitacre, Rose Schuler, and Lauren Scharfenberg — for lots of good things this season,” said Coach Dave Dahl.
Also returning is the team’s No. 1 singles player, junior Julia Johnson. “Julia had major surgery on her wrist last spring, and it was thought then that she would not even hold a racquet until September,” Dahl said. “That she is already able to play is a big boost to the team.”
Johnson had an unbeaten score against Regis, lost 3-6, 5-7 vs. Unity, and won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles along with Maggie Whitacre.
“I was really pleased with the efforts of sophomores Nicole Buechler and Morgan Karras. They both played very well in their varsity debuts,” Dahl said. Buechler won over Regis by 6-3, 6-0 and over Unity by 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, and lost 2-6, 5-7 to North at No. 2 singles.
These were the rest of the scores:
Molly Krohn at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-1 over Regis and 6-4, 7-5 over Unity, and at No. 1 singles, 0-6, 2-6 vs. North. Hanna Naegeli at No. 3 singles, 7-6(2), 7-5 over Regis, and 2-6, 0-6 while teamed with Hayley VanGelder vs. North. Maggie Whitacre and Maddie Karras at No. 2 doubles, 6-2, 6-0 over Regis and 7-5, 6-0 vs. Unity. Lauren Scharfenberg and VanGelder at No. 3 doubles, 6-1, 6-2 over Regis. Rose Schuler and Lauren Scharfenberg at No. 2 doubles, 6-2, 6-3 over Unity and 6-1, 4-6 (9-11) vs. North. Kelsey Scharfenberg and VanGelder at No. 3 doubles, 6-7(5), 6-3 (11-9) over Unity. Naegeli and VanGelder at No. 3 doubles, 2-6, 0-6 vs. North. Maddie Karras at No. 3 singles, 0-6, 1-6 vs. North.
Upcoming matches are a triple dual at Eau Claire Memorial on Tuesday, a home match vs. Marshfield at 11 a.m. on Aug. 22, and another triple dual at River Falls the following day.
