Dear Editor,

Primary election forums for western Wisconsin began on Aug. 12 on Wisconsin Public Radio with the debate between Bob Hughes, Republican from River Falls, and Rep. Kitty Rhoades, Republican from Hudson.

Hughes and Rep. Rhoades are competing in the Republican primary for the State Assembly seat in the 30th District.

WPR news correspondent Mary Jo Wagner moderated the debate. Public interest in the debate was high as evidenced by the large number of callers.

Rep. Rhoades, the incumbent and 10-year veteran of the State Assembly 30th District, was the clear winner. Her depth and breadth of experience was showcased by the event. Her practice as co-chair of the Budget Committee allowed her to address the budget concerns of the listener adeptly. Rep. Rhoades has a vision for Wisconsin that calls for investing in our children, our senior citizens and putting the pocketbooks of Wisconsin taxpayers ahead of increased spending.

Hughes, Rep. Rhoades’ opponent, is quoted as saying, “I don’t want to be a politician…” on bobhughes.org. His answers to the pointed questions from the public came up short while Rep. Rhoades proved her competence with each question.

At the end of the event, experience was the watchword. Hughes cannot compete.
